Introduction

Dr. Min-Chun Pan received his master and Ph.D. degree in mechanical engineering from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium, in 1992 and 1996, respectively. In 1996, he was a senior researcher at the Sanyang Industry Corporation (SYM), and meanwhile, a junction associate professor at the Department of Forensic Science, Central Police University, Taiwan. After a two-and-half-a-year career in industry, in 1999 he joined the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the National Central University (NCU), Taiwan as an assistant professor. He has been an associate professor and full professor with both the Mechanical Engineering Department and the Graduate Institute of Biomedical Engineering (GIBE) since 2003 and 2007, respectively. From August 2010 to July 2013, he served as the director of GIBE, NCU. Dr. Pan has been the recipient of Research Excellent Award at th NCU consecutively since 2007.

The Sensing Diagnostics Monitoring and Prognostics (SenDiMoniProg) Lab (or previously Diagnostics and Biomedical Measurement Lab, D-BioM Lab) was founded in Feb 1999. Its research themes cover sensing technology, signal processing and their integration related topics. Recently our study more focuses on the fields of medical devices design and implementation, and intelligent monitoring/diagnostics/prognostics applied in manufacturing process and machine operation process, including:

(1) Medical Devices Design and Implementation (i) near infrared diffuse optical imaging, (ii) implant osseointegration stability assessment techniques and devices, (iii) IMU-based wearable devices for rehab engineering and intelligent life.

(2) Intelligent Monitoring/Diagnostics/Prognostics (i) signal processing toolbox for intelligent monitoring and diagnostics that comprises time-frequency/time-scale analysis and order tracking etc., (ii) degradation assessment of cutting tools of band saws and circular saws, (iii) joint evaluation and fault diagnostics for surface mount technology, (iv) construction of trouble shooting system and degradation model for Li-ion battery modules.

Besides, some advanced research topics have been initiated such as inertial navigation, localization and route tracking, and firmware-based information security.

Research Topics

Dr. Pan’s research interests are in the areas of diffuse optical imaging system, medical devices design especially for dental implant osseointegration assessing device, and IMU-based rehab engineering and navigation, sensing technology, mechanical/biomedical signal processing, and condition monitoring / diagnostics and prognostics of mechanical systems and manufacturing processes, etc.
