Cloud and Aerosol Laboratory (CAL)
Research Field
Dr. Neng-Huei (George) Lin holds the Ph.D. and M.S. in Atmospheric Sciences from the North Carolina State University, and B.S. from the National Taiwan University. He is a Professor in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences, Department of Chemistry and Graduate Institute of Environmental Engineering at the National Central University (NCU), Taiwan. He was honored as the Distinguished Professor at NCU in 2013. Dr. Lin served as the Department Chairperson in 2002-2005, and the Dean for the Office of Student Affairs in 2006-2009 at the NCU. He was appointed as the Distinguished Professor of Tokyo University of Agriculture and Technology (TUAT) from Fall 2014 to Spring 2017. He was also honored as the Adjunct Professor at Ching Mai University (CMU), Thailand from Fall 2014 to 2016. He has been the Invited Visiting Professor of Kanazawa University in 2015-2019.
Dr. Lin’s researches are focused on physical and chemical processes of atmospheric pollutants including acid deposition, cloud chemistry and physics, biomass-burning aerosol, atmospheric mercury and greenhouse gases, with emphases on biomass-burning aerosol-cloud-radiative interaction in East and Southeast Asia (i.e. Seven South East Asian Studies, 7-SEAS), and atmospheric background measurements at Mt. Lulin (2,862 m, LABS) in recent 15 years. Dr. Lin is also the program coordinator of the Taiwan Acid Rain Network. He has been heavily involved in many international field campaigns, such as ACE-Asia, ABC/EAREX, BASE-ASIA, 7-SEAS and Korea-Japan-HK-Taiwan Asian Continental Outflow Study, Asian Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network (APMMN), etc. He is very active in international collaborations and was frequently invited as plenary and invited speakers in AMS, AGU, AAC and professional conferences, symposiums and workshops. Dr. Lin has published more than 170 SCI papers and book chapters.
Dr. Lin is presently the Editor-in-Chief of Aerosol and Air Quality Research, and had served as the Editorial Board of Atmospheric Environment and Asian Journal of Atmospheric Environment. He has been serving the member of many technical and advisory committees on international, national and ministry levels. He served as the Secretary in General, Vice President and President of Taiwan Association for Aerosol Research (TAAR) in 2000-2001, 2004-2008 and 2009-2011, respectively, and now is the Fellow and Honorary President of TAAR. Besides, he has been elected as the Fellow, Asian Aerosol Research Assembly (AARA) in 2019, and the Fellow, Meteorological Society of ROC (Taiwan) in 2021.
Cloud and Aerosol Laboratory (CAL) in the Department of Atmospheric Sciences is led by Prof. George Lin, Prof. Guey-Rong Sheu and Prof. Carlo Wang, and presently consists of two assistant researchers, 4 postdoctoral fellows, 10 technicians and 14 graduate students. CAL primarily focuses on the researches related to the physical and chemical processes of long-range transported atmospheric pollutants (acidic and toxic substances, Asian dust, biomass burning, etc.) and their impact on health, environment and climate. CAL has co-managed the Asian-Pacific Mercury Monitoring Network with USEPA. We also lead several field campaigns of the Seven Southeast Asian Studies (7-SEAS). CAL not only runs several networks and baseline stations but also conducts real-time air quality forecast system using WRF-CMAQ and off-line impact studies.
