Professor Yung Chang is currently a chair professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at Chung Yuan Christian University. He joined the department in 2006 and has been actively engaged in research, teaching, and service for the past 17 years. Since 2017, he has served as the Director of the R&D Center for Membrane Technology, leading the research team in advancing research and industry collaboration in the field of membrane. In 2022, he assumed the role of Vice Officer for Research and Development Division at Chung Yuan Christian University, and in 2023, he took on the position of Chief Officer of Industry-Academia Operations, promoting innovative research and development, industry-academia collaboration, international linkages, and campus entrepreneurship.
Professor Chang’s extensive research expertise encompasses quantum physical chemistry, polymer chemistry synthesis, biointerface science, biomedical membrane engineering, biochemical separation engineering, and medical devices. He has supervised and trained over 167 engineering and materials research talents, including master’s and doctoral researchers, as well as undergraduate project students. Professor Chang has also published 277 SCI papers in international academic journals and has been recognized as one of the “Top 2% Scientists” globally. His research findings have had significant impact in the academic community, with over 12,322 citations and an outstanding h-index of 62, and a CNCI value exceeding 1.3, indicating high international recognition. In 2024, he stood out in the “Academic Career Scientific Impact” ranking, placing him among the top 2% of global scientists.
Professor Yung Chang's Laboratory, the Biomaterials and Biomolecular Engineering Lab, mainly deals with enhancing biomaterials and making sure they have suitable properties in their applications such as bio-compatibility or resistance to fouling. In order to achieve this, specific copolymers are usually synthesized and surface modification is performed with the biomaterials. The Biomaterials and Biomolecular Engineering Lab is also part of Chung Yuan Christain University's R&D Center for Membrane Technology which gives access to a vast network of professors and researchers as well as instruments and machines that are vital for the tests and experiments necessary in performing research.
- Scientific research interests include advanced biomaterials, biomolecular engineering, biomedical interface science, biopolymer physical chemistry, biomimetic material science, and biomedical healthcare membranes.
- The development of universal anti-(bio)fouling principles for the design of sustainable interfaces and membranes. His membrane research activities involve the application of advanced membrane materials, process technologies, and engineering systems for industries in water treatment (membrane bioreactor) and health care (blood transfusion).
