Li-Wei Kang received his B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in Computer Science from National Chung Cheng University, Chiayi, Taiwan, in 1997, 1999, and 2005, respectively. Since February 2024, he has been serving as a Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and the Graduate Institute of AI Interdisciplinary Applied Technology at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taipei, Taiwan. He also held the position of Associate Vice President for Continuing Education at NTNU from August 2021 to July 2024 and served as an Associate Professor at NTNU from August 2019 to January 2024.
Prior to this, Dr. Kang was an Associate Professor at the Graduate School of Engineering Science and Technology-Doctoral Program and the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Yunlin University of Science and Technology, Yunlin, Taiwan, from August 2016 to July 2019, and an Assistant Professor from February 2013 to July 2016. He also worked at the Institute of Information Science, Academia Sinica, Taipei, Taiwan, as an Assistant Research Scholar from 2010 to 2013 and as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow from 2005 to 2010.
His research interests include multimedia content analysis, multimedia communications, and artificial intelligence.
Dr. Kang currently serves as an Associate Editor for the International Journal of Pattern Recognition and Artificial Intelligence. He has also been an Editorial Board Member and Guest Editor for the International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks, as well as a Guest Editor for the APSIPA Transactions on Signal and Information Processing. In addition, Dr. Kang has made significant contributions as the Special Session Co-Chair for APSIPA ASC 2012, the Registration Co-Chair for APSIPA ASC 2013, and a Ph.D. Forum Committee Member for APSIPA ASC 2018. He has also been a member of the Organizing Committee for IEEE ICCE-TW since 2015. Furthermore, Dr. Kang has served as a member of the Multimedia Systems & Applications Technical Committee (MSATC) of the IEEE Circuits and Systems Society and as the Chair of the APSIPA (Asia Pacific Signal and Information Processing Association) IVM (Image, Video, and Multimedia) TC.
He has received several accolades, including the Top 10% Paper Award at IEEE MMSP 2013, the Best Performance Award in the SMP (Social Media Prediction) Challenge at ACM MM 2019, and the Best Paper Award at APSIPA ASC 2020.
The Multimedia and Artificial Intelligence (MMAI) Lab, established in August 2019 at the Department of Electrical Engineering, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taipei, Taiwan, is led by Prof. Li-Wei Kang. The lab focuses on research in Computer Vision, Image Processing, Multimedia Content Analysis, Artificial Intelligence, and a variety of multimedia applications.
Currently, the lab comprises 16 master's students and 4 undergraduate students who are actively engaged in research on image restoration and enhancement techniques, as well as artificial intelligence-driven multimedia applications. The lab's research is primarily funded by projects from the National Science and Technology Council, Taiwan, and through Industry-Academia Collaboration Projects.
