Biomedical Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (BAIR) Lab
Research Field
Cheng-Kai Lu (Senior Member, IEEE) received his B.S. and M.S. degrees in Electronics Engineering from Fu Jen Catholic University, Taipei, Taiwan, in 2001 and 2003, respectively, and his Ph.D. in Engineering from The University of Edinburgh, United Kingdom, in 2012. Following his doctoral studies, he served as Director of the Research and Development Division at Chyao Shiunn Electronic Industrial Co. (Shanghai), before transitioning to the Science & Technology Policy Research and Information Centre at the National Applied Research Laboratories, Taiwan. Dr. Lu has held key roles in professional organizations, including serving in an executive position with the IEEE EMBS Malaysia Chapter from January 2017 to February 2018, and continuing his leadership with the IEEE ED/MTT/SSC Penang Joint Chapter from 2018 onward. Since February 2022, he has been serving as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), Taipei, Taiwan. After two years, he regained the rank of Associate Professor, following a period of reassignment. Prior to NTNU, Dr. Lu was a Senior Lecturer (UK system) in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS (UTP), Malaysia, where he served from 2016 to 2021. Dr. Lu’s research interests encompass medical imaging, embedded systems, artificial intelligence, and clinical decision support systems. His expertise spans both academia and industry, with over 8 years of experience in the industrial sector. His scholarly output includes peer-reviewed journal articles, book chapters, conference papers, and technical reports, complemented by a portfolio of patents, several of which have been successfully licensed. Notably, one of his inventions, a PS keyboard system (TW Patent, 2006), has been adopted by the Republic of China Air Force, with further applications in light aircraft and long-haul flight systems.
Among his most impactful contributions is his work on production line automation during his tenure at Chyao Shiunn Electronic Industrial Co., where his innovations led to a substantial reduction in labor costs. Dr. Lu’s industrial contributions, together with his academic endeavors, underscore his distinguished career at the intersection of engineering and applied research.
The Biomedical Artificial Intelligence & Robotics (BAIR) Lab, National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU), is now recruiting bachelor holders and postgraduate students to intern in 2025/2026. The internship duration is quite flexible and can be determined in consultation with each candidate. The BAIR Lab, supervised by Dr. Cheng-Kai Lu, is engaged in developing tailor-made artificial intelligence (AI) solutions for biomedical applications and robotics. In particular, the BAIR Lab closely cooperate with international R&D teams from the UK (Edinburgh University), Malaysia (Universiti Teknologi PETRONAS, UTP; UCSI University, UCSI), Singapore (Tan Tock Seng Hospital) individually in three aspects of research works: music therapy (MT) robot, explainable artificial intelligence (XAI), federated learning (FL) and Multimodal Health Monitoring System for Personalized Real-Time Monitoring and Prediction of Parkinson’s Disease Patients. Conducting these projects will allow us to realize "cross-domain innovation" and "smart health" and to nurture a new generation of AI talents for Taiwan and the world.
