Dr. Pei-Ming Yang is an associate professor in the Graduate Institute of Cancer Biology and Drug Discovery at Taipei Medical University. He has experience in biomarker-guided drug repurposing for cancer therapy based on several bioinformatics approaches, such as Connectivity Map (CMap) analysis and TCGA data mining. He is also familiar with research related to anticancer drug mechanisms and signaling transduction.
In recent years, our major research interest is the application of bioinformatics approaches and resources to investigate polypharmacology and drug repurposing. Drug repurposing is an unconventional drug discovery approach to explore new disease indications from the existing clinical drugs. Even shelved drugs that never enter or are failed during clinical trials might be rescued if novel mechanism-of-actions (MOAs) or targets are identified. Polypharmacology describes the ability of a drug to affect more than one molecular target, which is now commonly accepted as a basic property of small molecules and serves as a foundational principle for drug repurposing. Exploring the polypharmacology is highly useful for discovering drug’s novel MOAs to improve their therapeutic efficacy and treat different diseases.
