Prof. Kumar established a Nano & Green Analytical Technology (NGAT) Laboratory in the Department of Medicinal and Applied Chemistry, KMU, in August 2016 with a keen multidisciplinary research interest mainly focusing on two technologies, namely, 1) green analytical technology (GAT) where we devoted on the research of developments of green analytical methodologies, including green sample preparation techniques, advanced chromatographic and mass spectrometric techniques, electrochemical techniques and analytical method developments and application towards clinical, food, drugs, and environmental analysis. And, another focus on 2) nanotechnology, where we intend on the design and developments of novel sustainable nanomaterials for various analytical (microextraction techniques, electrochemical sensors), environmental (pollutant degradation), and energy (fuel cell, supercapacitor, biofuel, bioenergy) applications.

Research Topics

We have developed and reported several novel green sample preparation techniques/green analytical methodologies, including in-syringe-based semi-automated fast extraction techniques, semi-automated nanomaterial-based pipette-tip micro-solid phase extraction (µSPE) techniques, nanomaterial-coated cellulose paper based SPE techniques, vortex-assisted salt-induced liquid-liquid microextraction techniques for various analysis applications such as betel nut toxic ingredients analysis, omega fatty acids biomonitoring, biometabolites/biomonitoring of environmental exposures, drug monitoring, and other environmental contaminants analysis. Moreover, we also developed several novel nanomaterials (MXene, 2D-GCN, Carbon materials) based chemical sensors and biosensors for emerging pollutants or biomolecules for rapid and sensitive determinations. The experimental developments and applications from our research works can be potentially used as an alternative analytical tool in various analytical sectors/companies for the analysis and quality control of target compounds in complex samples. Also, these results can be highly useful to ensure people’s exposure to toxins in Taiwan to protect public health and safety and also helpful to a reassessment of the toxic compounds in the environment and to project from the associated human health risks in Taiwan.

Honor

Based on our research outputs, I have received the “Outstanding Young Researcher Awards” from KMU for the four consecutive academic years (2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 ), and Listed as World's Top 2% Scientists in the year (2020, 2021, 2022), representing the top 2% of the most-cited scientists’ ranking in Chemistry-Analytical, and Energy disciplines based on h-index 45 with a total citation of 7500+, according to the ranking database released by Stanford University, USA.

Educational Background

I am an analytical chemist with multidisciplinary specialization skills in advanced analytical techniques, including chromatography and mass spectrometry techniques, green analytical/sample preparation techniques, electrochemical techniques, and green/sustainable nanomaterials for various analytical, environmental, and energy applications. I obtained my master's degree in analytical chemistry with an electrochemistry specialization from the University of Madras, India (2005). Then, I received my PhD degree and two years of post-doctoral studies in the green analytical chemistry laboratory under Professor Dr. Jen-Fon Jen, Department of Chemistry, National Chung-Hsing University (NCHU), Taichung, Taiwan (2007-2013). Later, I served as an Analytical R&D Group Leader in a Pharmaceutical company (Formosa Laboratories, Inc., Taiwan), and also worked as a food and environmental safety analysis lab Scientific and Technical Manager at Chi Mei Inspection Technology Co. Ltd (CHIMEI group, Taichung city) (2013-2016). Moreover, I have also obtained my second Master's degree in Business Administration with a specialization in technology management from Asia University, Taichung, Taiwan (2014-2016).
