Research Field

Chemistry

Introduction

Professor Ian Liau received his B.S. degree in chemistry from National Tsing Hua University (NTHU, Taiwan), M.S. degree in chemistry from National Taiwan University (NTU, Taiwan), and Ph.D. degree in physical chemistry from the University of Chicago (U.S.A.). Soon after graduation, he joined a biotech company, Fluidigm Corporation (U.S.A.), and later the Biomedical Engineering Center (Taiwan), where he engaged in developing microfluidic technology and a renal-function reader, respectively. He is currently a Professor of Applied Chemistry at the National Yang-Ming Chiao-Tung University (formerly National Chiao Tung University). He is also a joint-appointment professor at the Department of Biological Science and Technology at the same university.

Our Biomedical Photonics Lab at the Department of Applied Chemistry of NYCU focuses on the development and application of optical spectroscopy and microscopy for important biological problems.

Currently, we have the following research directions:

(1) Membrane physical chemistry

(2) Exploring Peptide-Membrane Interactions: Unraveling Mechanisms of Endosomal Escape in Biologics and Antimicrobial Action

(3) Development of zebrafish models of cardio-cerebrovascular diseases, Dynamic 3D cardiac calcium imaging of zebrafish

Research Topics

Biophysical and bioanalytical chemistry, translational research, biomedical photonics
