Seismic Resilience Lab.
Research Field
Ting-Yu Hsu specializes in structural health monitoring (SHM) and earthquake early warning (EEW). He is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Construction Engineering at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech). Dr. Hsu received his BS from National Cheng Kung University, his MS from Taiwan Tech, and his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering at the Department of Civil Engineering - National Taiwan University. He is also an adjunct research fellow at NCREE, where he has already worked for 16 years. He holds registered professional engineer licenses and serves on several professional committees. He was awarded RISUD Visiting Fellowship by the Kwong Wah Education Foundation as invited by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University. His Seismic Resilience research laboratory mainly applies professional skills & techniques in structural dynamics, artificial intelligence, system identification, and earthquake engineering.

The lab. is doing the following research:
Many SHM techniques for different structures have been developed and validated via shaking table experiments. A demonstration site at the administration building of Central Taiwan Science Park has been established to illustrate the fast post-earthquake safety evaluation capability.
A Successful Application of NCREE's Earthquake Early Warning System During 2016 Meinong Earthquake (Hsu et al. 2016) & 2018 Hualian Earthquake (Hsu et al. 2018). Alerts were issued before the strong seismic wave struck, even at the stations near the epicenter (the closest only 7 km). The system employs the PGA algorithm developed by Dr. Hsu et al. (2013).
The SHM & EEW techniques have been applied to buildings, nuclear power plants, dams, power transmits towers, high-tech factories, high-speed railways, wind turbines et al to improve earthquake resilience.
Semi-active isolators for equipment based on earthquake early warning techniques
Development of equipment isolation system with clutch varying inerter dampers
Edge-computing earthquake early warning system development
