Dr. Hsuan-Hung Liao successfully obtained his Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry from RWTH Aachen University, Germany, with the support of a DAAD Scholarship under the supervision of Prof. Magnus Rueping. His academic achievements led to the award of a doctoral degree with the highest distinction of summa cum laude.
He initially conducted his postdoctoral research at RWTH Aachen University for a year. Afterward, he received the Marie Sklodowska-Curie Individual Fellowship and became a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Bristol, United Kingdom, under the supervision of Prof. Varinder Aggarwal, FRS.
He then returned to Taiwan in 2019 to begin his independent career as an Assistant Professor of Chemistry at National Sun Yat-sen University (NSYSU), where he also received the Ministry of Science and Technology Young Scholar Fellowship. Years later, he is now an Associate Professor at the same university and recently received the Thieme Chemistry Journal Award.
Internship in Dr. Liao’s group provides vast growth opportunities due to the established high-quality training set-up in the laboratory to develop or enhance the capacity for chemical synthesis. Complementary to the synthetic skills, interns will also be trained to use state-of-the-art analytical and automation equipment such as carousel reaction set-ups, High-Performance Liquid chromatography (HPLC), and Gas Chromatography–Mass Spectrometry, which are routinely used for enantioselective synthesis in Liao group. Intern’s engagement in this high-level method development and total synthesis will expand their skill set to complement their existing knowledge. Moreover, the high-impact publications from this research will increase the intern's profile and exposure to the chemistry community.
Dr. Liao’s research group focuses on organic synthesis and catalysis. Specifically, his research is directed toward developing fundamental new strategies that can revolutionize how we conduct the asymmetric synthesis of chiral molecules, being both step-economical (iterative synthesis) and environmentally benign (photocatalysis). This will provide considerable efficiency savings in terms of workforce, chemicals, and waste generated. This research will involve a collaborative network of chemistry, photophysics, computational chemistry, and chemical biology to realize a new synthetic methodology for the asymmetric synthesis of complex molecules and define their potential applications in drug design and chemical biology.
