Algae Bioseparation Research (ABR) focuses on the upstream and downstream processing of microalgae. In this lab, students are able to learn the skills to cultivate microalgae and apply into application involving:
- Wastewater bioremediation
- Waste utilization from food and fruit waste
- Extraction and recovery of value-added products
Khoo's research group focuses on the downstream processing of bioactive compounds such as proteins, lipids and carotenoids (i.e. astaxanthin, lutein and fucoxanthin) from microalgae using various extraction technologies such as liquid biphasic system, assisted-liquid biphasic system and ionic liquids technologies. His research interest also expanded to involve in microalgae-bacteria consortium for wastewater, heavy metal, and volatile organic compound bioremediation, algae-based biofuels and bioplastics, incorporation of Internet-of-things (IoT) and machine learning.
Algae Bioseparation Research (ABR) current main research focuses on net-zero waste initative using food waste liquor to cultivate microalgae for the production of high-valuable bioactive compounds. Below are the topic for each sub-projects:
- Utilization of food waste-based medium for the cultivation of microalgae
- Extraction of value-added product from food waste-based cultivated microalgae biomass
- Extracted microalgae crude waste for the cultivation of bacteria for production of lactic acid
