Introduction

Prof. Cheng-Di Dong is a Chair Professor at the Department of Marine Environmental Engineering, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology (NKUST), Taiwan. Prof. Dong obtained a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering from the University of Delaware, USA, in 1993. Currently, he is the Dean of the College of Hydrosphere (NKUST) and the director of the Sustainable Environment Research Center (NKUST). Prof. Dong’s research focuses on waste-to-resources, biotechnology, nanotechnology, novel catalytic materials, and biochar for environmental applications. He has published over 500 research and review articles in leading international journals, 7 book chapters, and edited 6 special issues of scientific journals. His h-index is ~56, with over 13,000 citations. He has won several scientific awards and grants from renowned academic bodies. Professor Dong was in the “World’s Top 2% Scientist-Stanford University Releases List (2021, 2022)” for Environmental Sciences. He is a Fellow of the International Bioprocessing Association. Professor Dong currently serves as Editor of Sustainable Environment Research, and he is an Editorial Board Member of Bioresource Technology. He has also served as Guest Editor of Special Issues in Bioresource Technology, Environmental Pollution, Bioresource Technology Report, Catalysts, and Applied Sciences.

The main cause of environmental problems is human economic activity. Respecting the environment and living in harmony with it while pursuing growth is crucial to achieving the objective of sustainable environmental development without sacrificing the prospects for future generations. The problem of environmental contamination has progressively come to light in recent years.  Our university created the "Sustainable Environment Research Center" in January 2019 to conduct research and development on sustainable environmental and energy technologies. The tasks of this center include environmental monitoring, on-site remediation assessments, environmental management strategy planning, off-site treatment technology development, green energy technology research and development, resource reuse, etc. The primary goal is to integrate overall environmental research resources such as:

(1) Research and development of environmental pollution remediation technologies.
(2) Research and development of clean energy, low-carbon energy, and green environmental technologies.
(3) Research and development of environmental material resource recycling technology.
(4) Accepting commissioned projects and executing research projects on the environment and energy.
(5) Provide professional technical and testing services for the environment and energy.
(6) Organizing activities such as promotion, education, training, and seminars related to environmental and energy issues.
(7) Promote technical exchanges in environmental and energy technology internationally.
(8) Other matters related to environmental and energy technology.

This center will leverage abundant academic research and development capabilities, valuable instrument and equipment resources, and comprehensive software and hardware facilities to collaborate with relevant industries and government agencies domestically and internationally. This aims to implement pioneering and practical technology research in academia to achieve excellence and sustainable development.
