Introduction

Shih-Torng Ding is a native of Yunlin County, Taiwan, born on December 25, 1965. He obtained his bachelor's and master's degrees in Animal Science from National Taiwan University in 1988 and 1990, respectively. After completing his military service as a reserve officer in 1992, he went to the United States to pursue a Ph.D. in Nutritional Biochemistry at The Ohio State University. Upon receiving his doctorate in 1996, he joined the Biotechnology Center at The Ohio State University for molecular biology training. In July of the same year, he went to the Baylor College of Medicine, Department of Pediatrics, and the USDA Children's Nutrition Research Center, where he served as a postdoctoral research associate and assistant research scientist, conducting research on nutrition and gene expression.

In 2000, Ding returned to Taiwan and joined the faculty as an assistant professor, establishing a molecular biology research laboratory. He was promoted to professor in 2006 and concurrently served as the head of the Learning Promotion Division at the Center for Teaching and Learning Development and the head of the Research and Development Division at the Biotechnology Center. In 2007, he was appointed as a professor in the Institute of Biotechnology.

Ding's research has been supported by the National Science Council of the Executive Yuan, the National Agricultural Biotechnology Program, and the Council of Agriculture. In 2008, he was appointed as the director of the Biotechnology Research Center. In 2009, he recruited two Nobel laureates and three members of the National Academy of Sciences to serve as distinguished professors at the center.

The Micromolecular Biology Laboratory is a research facility focused on the study of animal functional genomics, obesity biology, nutrient-gene interactions, genetic molecular markers and reproductive performance, as well as molecular markers and breeding conservation for wild animals. Under the guidance of experienced faculty, graduate students in this laboratory conduct cutting-edge research in these specialized areas of molecular biology. The laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instruments and technologies to support a wide range of experimental techniques, from genome sequencing and bioinformatics analysis to cell culture and molecular assays. Students have the opportunity to develop essential skills in experimental design, data analysis, and scientific communication as they work towards their thesis projects. While the scope of research is more focused compared to larger research institutions, the Micromolecular Biology Laboratory provides a nurturing environment for students to make meaningful contributions to the advancement of knowledge in these important fields of study.
