Introduction

Dr Keng-Tung Wu is an expert in biomass energy in Taiwan, and has been engaged in biomass gasification research for 25 years. Dr Wu received his doctoral degree in chemical engineering from University College London (UCL) in 1997. Afterward, he joined the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) in Taiwan as a Researcher at the Energy and Resources Laboratories to develop biomass gasification and co-firing biomass with coal technologies, and led a research team to build the largest circulating fluidized bed gasification plant for biomass fuels in Taiwan. In 2006, Dr Wu joined the Department of Forestry at Chung Hsing University (NCHU) as an Assistant Professor, and heads the Bioenergy Research Core Laboratory supported by the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at NCHU. Recently, he also served as the Director of the Occupational Safety and Health and Environmental Protection Center (SHE Center) at NCHU in the Academic Year 2023. Moreover, Dr Wu was the first secretary of the APEC Expert Group on New and Renewable Energy Technologies (EGNRET) served from 2011 to 2023, and recently was appointed again in 2025.

Now, Dr Wu is an Associate Professor at the Department of Forestry and the CEO of the Office of Industrial Carbon Offset Promotions at NCHU. He has also been an Adjunct Distinguished Researcher at ITRI since 2005 and an Adjunct Project Consultant at the Institute of Economic Research (TIER) since 2013. Moreover, Dr Wu has been an Executive Member of the Board at the Bio-energy Technology Development Association (TBETA) and the Biochar Industry Development Association in Taiwan since 2016.

Dr Wu's research involves fluidisation engineering, biomass thermochemical conversion (gasification, pyrolysis, torrefaction, carbonisation, etc.), bioenergy integrated with microgrids, biochar production & application, biomass-coal co-firing, solid recovered fuel (SRF), chaotic dynamics, and APEC energy policy.

Bioenergy Research Core Laboratory at Chung Hsing University (NCHU) was founded in 2007 and supported by the NCHU College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. The Lab was the first and only one in Taiwan for fully biomass thermochemical process practice. The bioenergy conversion facilities and biomass energy instruments include:
