Introduction

Dr. Hsiu-Ling (Shirley) Chen is a highly accomplished scholar with a strong background in both research and teaching. As a full professor and chair of the Graduate Institute of Digital Learning and Education at the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, she has received multiple teaching awards, including the Excellent Teaching Award, as well as research recognition for her contributions in integrating technology into education and promoting higher-order thinking. With over a decade of experience advising international students and having mentored more than 20 students from diverse backgrounds, Dr. Chen is deeply committed to fostering global academic exchange. She is passionate about providing international students with a meaningful experience in Taiwan’s academic environment, inspiring them to pursue further studies, and building lasting connections with Taiwan’s vibrant research community.

Dr. Hsiu-Ling (Shirley) Chen's research lab at the Graduate Institute of Digital Learning and Education is a dynamic, interdisciplinary hub dedicated to advancing innovative approaches in education through technology and pedagogy. The lab’s research focuses on integrating digital tools into learning and teaching, fostering higher-order thinking skills such as critical, creative, and reflective thinking, and promoting social-emotional learning. With diverse projects ranging from digital storytelling and game-based learning to flipped classrooms and collaborative problem-solving, the lab consistently contributes impactful findings to both academia and practice. Dr. Chen’s team currently includes members from six countries—America, Ethiopia, Indonesia, Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam—reflecting the lab’s global perspective. Moreover, Dr. Chen has taught students from over 20 countries, creating a culturally rich environment that enhances cross-cultural collaboration and academic excellence. This vibrant, international lab serves as an incubator for innovative ideas, preparing researchers and educators to shape the future of digital learning worldwide.
