Research Field
Professor Ivy, Yih-Chih, Hsu, the Founding Director and Principal investigator of Cancer Center and Department of Bioscience technology of Chung Yuan Christian University (CYCU). Professor Hsu has more than 10 years industrial experiences before joined CYCU. She obtained her Ph.D. from Michigan University, East Lansing and M.S. from Texas A&M University, College Station. Dr. Hsu obtained MBA in MOT at National Chiao-Tung University, Hsinchu. This MBA program was designed for the top managers worked at Hsinchu Science Park and ITRI high technology research institutes.
Professor Hsu has dual academic and industrial background which is quite rare and valuable background and it equipped her conduct any research toward outcome-oriented to make significant impacts on society. Dr. Yih-Chih Hsu endeavors to coordinate multidisciplinary research. She has published more than forty peer-reviewed papers in international journals, twenty filed patents, and has been invited as a speaker in numerous international conferences or events. She also has been invited to serve as panel or reviewer in many important institutes and committees, such as National Science Council, Taiwan.
Dr. Hsu was working at Biomedical Engineering Center (BMEC), Industrial Technology Research Institute for 9 years (2000-2008) as a PI and Business Development Manager, leading major international collaborations and agreement negotiations, alliance establishment, technology licensing-in and out, assisting ITRI BMEC spin-off start-ups and she is also a principle investigator of several research projects. Moreover, her MBA in MOT (Management of Technology) background empowered her for several key positions and assignments at BMEC, ITRI. Dr. Hsu was appointed as the Technology Transfer Manager to conduct transfer BMEC/ITRI technology to industries worldwide. In addition, Dr. Hsu has worked extensively with several international collaborators including MIT (US), CSIRO (Australia), U of Pitts (US), etc. Dr. Hsu has assisted six ITRI BMEC R&D teams to form start-ups spun-off from ITRI.
Dr. Hsu's accomplishments are shown in research, administrative and industrial perspectives. From 1997 to 2022, Dr. Hsu was respectively the recipients of First Place Dissertation Research Award (by the Meat and Muscle Division, Institute of Food Technologist, US), Best Paper Award (by the Biomedical Engineering Center, ITRI, Taiwan), Distinguished Scientist Award (2015-now, by the National Science Council, Taiwan), National Innovation Award in Nanomedicine (2018, 2021, by the Research Center for Biotechnology and Medicine Policy, Taiwan), Future Technology Award (2022, by the National Science Council, Taiwan) and Silver Medal Award (2022, by the Taiwan Innotech Expo, Taiwan). At the meantime, Dr. Hsu serves as the organizing committee to coordinate the international Nanotechnology Conference in July 2023 (for the Taiwan Nanomedicine Society, Taiwan).
She has been working on oncology field, such as nanomedicine for targeted drug delivery fields and photodynamic therapy for 20 years. She has integrated research in physics, chemistry, material science and engineering towards the application of nanoscience and nanotechnology to the prevention and treatment of human diseases, through intramural and extramural collaborative activities. In 2017, Dr. Hsu established the Center for Commercialization of Cancer Theranostics (CCCT), Chun Yuan Christian University was also appointed as the Director of Center for Commercialization of Cancer Theranostics (CCCT), Chun Yuan Christian University and was appointed as the Founding Director. In the past, she has devoted in the photodynamic therapy, nanomedicine and gene therapy nanomedicine research and have validated on disease animal models, such as oral premalignant lesions, head and neck, colon, pancreatic, liver, brain, lung and bile duct cancers. Professor Hsu works closely with industrial partners including preclinical CRO, clinical hospitals, pharmaceutical, biotech and medical device companies and she has the dual background in science/technology and commercial business development in order to empower her R&D works to the global society to make significant impact. Under Dr. Hsu’s leadership,
Professor Hsu’s professional speciality is nanomedicine and nanodiagnosis (liposomal technology for small molecular or gene therapy), photodynamic therapy and diagnosis and translational research. Conducting interdisciplinary research and development, through collaborations whose effort combine the methodologies of biological, chemical, physical sciences and engineering, on the important unmet needs in the nanotechnology application in healthcare and society needs to the integrated and systemic levels. To make significant impacts on the society, Professor Hsu has devoted in technology commercialization including making business strategy, estimating unmet marketing needs, meeting FDA regulatory requirements, conducting business plan, and start-ups from University and Institute are crucial to the success of making social impacts.
