Goals and Characteristics
The educational objective of the department is to help students to build up solid knowledge base in the field of Earth and Life Sciences, while embedding environmental education programs amongst so as to train studentsinto environmental educators.
The interdisciplinary Bachelor’s Program delivers comprehensive knowledge of Biology and Earth Sciences, aiming to cultivate specialists in environmental changes. There are three main focal groups in the department: 1.) Earth Sciences, 2.) Sustainable Development and Environmental Education, and 3.) Life Sciences. Curricula of “Earth Sciences” and “Life Sciences” groups integrate basic sciences and applied researches. Students could choose courses to take based on their interests and academic career planning, as well as taking education courses so as to expand their academic or professional careers after graduation.
Master’s/In-Service Master’s Program focuses on combining researches of environmental education, resources and sciences. 
The objective is to equip students with environmental education and environmental problem solving capabilities. Students will be trained into specialists with sufficient knowledge about Earth Sciences and Ecology, and with certain degree of environmental awareness and attitudes.
Core Competencies
Bachelor degree: 
1. be able to apply general science knowledge and literacy in earth and life science.
2. Be able to design and implement experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
3. be able to evaluate ecosystem with required technology, skill and assistant tools.
4. have knowledge of ecosystem and understand the relationships among the system.
5. be able to manage projects, collaborate and communicate.
6. be able to think independently and creatively, and have the capability to integrate interdisciplinary knowledge and information.
7. understand the impact of earth and life science on the environment, economy, society and the globe, and develop the habit and 
ability to active learning.
Master / In-Service Master : 
1. have the professional ability in investigating environmental education resources.
2. be able to integrate the resources of a facility into programs.
3. be able to apply various teaching materials, methods and evaluations.
4. be able to interpret and analyze the results of qualitative and quantitative research results.
5. have the ability of program management and report writing.
6. have environmental literacy of ecosystem and global environmental change.
Developments After Graduation
The department develop its curricula based on “Global Climate Changes,” particularly in the disciplines of Earth and Life Sciences, with an emphasis on consolidating students’ academic profession and increasing their competitiveness in the labor market.
Bachelor graduates could continue their education in top universities in Taiwan. Students graduated from “Earth Sciences” group could begin their professional careers as geology specialist, consultants at private weather risk consultancy companies, civil environmental assessment companies and so on; whereas, students graduated from “Life Sciences” group proceed to conduct researches in universities, governmental sectors, biotechnology companies as well as other private enterprises. 
Master graduates generally become certified environmental educators, beginning their careers at places where environmental educators are needed such as public sectors, legal entities as well as certified environmental education facilities. Examples of these places are Environmental Protection Bureaus, Zoos, Forest Bureau affiliated Educational Center, NGOs as well as environmental consultancy companies. 
Faculty of the department regularly collaborate with both public and private sectors to work on numerous projects. This could provide students with valuable opportunities to combine theories learned in the classrooms with practical experiences in the industry.
